Review : Marvel Legends Scarlet Witch, Captain America Civil War

Pros : Neat head sculpt. Costume is nicely realised. Love the spell casting hand posing.

Cons : The hip joints look wide in a standing position. The FX pieces look more like flame effects and aren't translucent enough

For a couple of years, the MCU Scarlet Witch figure has been one of the most sought after pieces from the Legends line. She was first included as the only MCU figure in the Abomination BAF wave, a wave that seemed to be distributed in low numbers worldwide - and that seemed to miss UK retailers all together.

She got a reprieve as a repack in a Best of MCU wave, with the Giant Man BAF, but this only got a limited release in the Far East and into Australia. In this best of MCU release she got some notable paint variations and the FX pieces were more pink and more translucent.

Wanda's release was pre-Facial print technology but the likeness is passable and there has been some focus put on the head with neat green eyes, blusher on the cheeks and neat lipstick application. We also get extra detailing in the hair which has a wash applied ot add depth as it lows down around the shoulders. She also gets her pendant, painted in a rich metallic silver.

The costume is the one worn in Civil War with the long red coat which is done in a soft plastic and that flows out from her hips. This is not a particularly natural flow for such a coat, but comes into its own as we will see later in certain posing.

Beneath the coat is a corset type top decorated to look like a burgundy leather with stitched detail down the centre. The trousers are a plain black and blend straight into the black boots. It would have been nice to see some differentiation between the two items either in colour or finish. Talking of paint finish, Wanda suffers like many figures from varying finish of the legs with the hip parts above the thigh cut seemingly a lot glossier than the rest of the legs beneath the joint.

One of the things I love on the figure is the sculpting of the hand, which is done to capture that spell casting pose we see Scarlet Witch use. The fingers are not splayed out in an open palm pose, and they have additional details added to them around the fingerless gloves including rings. The gloves are a darker colour than the coat, but as the pivot joint for the hand uses the lighter colour this stands out a little.

Wanda has just 16 points of articulation. The head is ball jointed and can move partially although doing so will spoil the flow of the hair. There is then a torso joint which gives some rotational and leaning posing. The arms have a ball jointed shoulder and then run straight into a single elbow joint which also rotates. The hands finish off, as we saw earlier, with a pivot that rotates and allows the hands ot be posed in those spell casting poses.

The leg articulation makes the hips look far too wide and that does spoil the look of the figure in any neutral posing. These ball jointed hips are followed by the thigh split, double jointed knees and ankle rockers. Even with wedged high heels the figure stands pretty well.

Wanda's accessories are FX pieces that are cast to look like her magical effects. These are more like flames than what we see on screen. They've been cast in a translucent plastic, but the first release (as seen here) is not quite translucent enough - while the 2nd release fixes that but takes them to a more pinker/purple tone.

Each piece is designed to simply slot over the hands. It takes a bit of trial and error to orientate them the right way, but once slotted in they hold in place and you can then begin to pose Wanda. Once in place for general spell casting they look far too much like her hands are on fire, and I prefer the hands as they are for that pose.

But if you want a flying Wanda....

While the figure does not come with a flight stand, nearly everything about her is designed to put her into her levitating pose. From the flared coat, to the wide hips to the way the FX pieces look - add Scarlet Witch to a suitable flying base and she is promoted from an average figure to a much more desirable addition to your collection.

This figure is soon to be eclipsed by the 2018 Infinity War release, but it is still an exceptional figure if posed and displayed the right way. The head sculpt is as good as any MCU head sculpt pre-face printing. The body and articulatio are awkward for standing with those wide hips and flared coat, but in that flying pose she looks awesome. I can't find any real paint issues, and the articulation does what it needs to. Only the FX pieces disappoint and to that end I score this version of Scarlet Witch a 4 out of 5.
